The Province of Misiones has been a pioneer and leader in biotechnology since the creation of Biofábrica Misiones S.A. (http://www.biofabrica.com.ar). By 2050, the world’s population is expected to be 9 billion and the demand for food is expected to rise by at least 30%. Thus, food safety will require substantial investment in food in a world where water and arable lands will become increasingly scarce. In this regard, the strength of Misiones in the field of biotechnology will be key to engage in large-scale food production. In 2015, Argentina exported foodstuffs in the amount of USD 34 billion, according to the WTO.

Positioned to cater to a world population with a higher life expectancy

. In 2003, the human genome was fully mapped. Given genetics’ contribution to the identification of causes for diseases, the pharmaceutical industry will increasingly rely on this scientific field. The genetic testing market alone will represent a USD-24-billion business opportunity by 2024. In 2015, the WTO stated that pharmaceutical product exports accounted for USD 8 billion. Likewise, genetic mapping of large populations will allow to improve medical care and public health policymaking. In 1992, Misiones introduced an undergraduate course of study in Genetics.

Herbal medicines in Misiones

The Laboratory of Medicinal Plants of Misiones (LEMIS) was created in 1991. Initially, liquid medicine was manufactured. In 1992, solid medicines were incorporated and, in 2005, herbal medicines started to be produced.
