Strategic geographic location. The city of Puerto Iguazú shares its border with the neighboring countries of Brazil and Paraguay. It is only 16.3 km (4 miles) away from Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) and 29.9 km (18 miles) away from Ciudad del Este (Paraguay).

It features one of the 7 wonders of nature. During the first semester of 2017, 626,090 people visited the Iguazú Falls.

In 2016, 1,272,028 people visited the Iguazú falls. 58% were Argentine, 27% were foreigners, and 15% were tourists from Mercosur countries.

Looking at the number of tourists that visited the falls during the 2001-2016 period, there was an increase of 164% in the amount of visitors.

So far, in 2017, during the January-June period, 626,090 people visited the seventh wonder of the world, January being the busiest month, with a total of 185,114 visitors.

Overnight stays in 2016

According to the Argentine Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), the Litoral region is the fifth region in the country in terms of overnight stays, with a total of 446,444 as of December 2016, meaning that it was one of the regions that grew the most with respect to 2015, i.e., by 22.9%. Iguazú had 108,697 overnight stays, 24.3% of the total overnight stays in the country. The region that showed the greatest growth in the supply of tourist lodging services (hotels and non-hotels) was the Litoral, with a 201.8% increase in the number of establishments and a 126.9% increase in the number of available beds. During the period under analysis, it can be observed that the provinces with the greatest growth in terms of establishments and beds were: Entre Ríos (302.5% and 154.1%), Santa Fe (228.7% and 147.7%), San Juan (192.6% and 118.9%), Jujuy (185.1% and 114%), and Misiones (187.9% and 140.2%). On the contrary, the lowest increase was observed in the City of Buenos Aires (4.3% and 4.2%) and the provinces of Formosa (14% and 50.5%) and Río Negro (16.5% and 25.2%).

Available lodging establishments 2013-2014

As regards the offer of hotels, non-hotels, and other lodging establishments by province, in 2013-2014, Misiones grew by 3.6%. In international chains, during 2014, Starwood Hotels offered the highest number of beds, 4,366 in total distributed across its establishments in the province of Buenos Aires, the City of Buenos Aires, and the provinces of Córdoba, Misiones, Salta, Tucumán, and Mendoza. Throughout 2014, five establishments belonging to international hotel chains were opened: two belonging to Accor, in Buenos Aires and Misiones, two belonging to Howard Johnson, in Córdoba and Tucumán, and one belonging to Intercontinental Hotel Group, in Buenos Aires

Starting July 3, 2017, a daily flight scheduled by ANDES from Monday to Friday will be incorporated.

Domestic air transportation 2013-2014

Moreover, the Litoral region received 4.8% more domestic flights in 2014 vis-à-vis the previous year, Rosario, Resistencia, Posadas, and Formosa being the cities that showed year-on-year growths, totaling 1,594, 1,096, 713, and 570 annual frequencies, respectively. As regards flights that landed in each of the provinces that make up the country’s tourist regions, it was observed that, in the Litoral region, the provinces of Misiones and Santa Fe concentrated 77.9% of the flights in the region, with an average of 363 monthly flights in the case of Misiones and 229 in the case of Santa Fe.

Main countries of origin of tourists 2013-2014

In 2014, tourism in Puerto Iguazú was mainly composed by Argentines (68.8%), followed by Brazilians and Paraguayans (22.1%). The rest of America was third (5.8%), followed by Europe and North America in the fourth and fifth spots (2.9% and 0.4%, respectively).

Main provinces of origin of tourists 2013-2014

In 2014, the Province of Buenos Aires and Greater Buenos Aires accounted for 14.7% of the tourists that visited Puerto Iguazú, followed by Misiones (11.6%), the City of Buenos Aires (10.9%), Corrientes (5.8%), and Chaco (5.4%).
