Comparative advantages

1-Misiones concentrates 55% of the planted forest mass in the country; this constitutes an important advantage in the acquisition of raw materials. (Technological and prospective sector analyses, 2016)

2-Argentina features comparative advantages as regards the production of planted species because pines and eucalyptuses grow much faster than in other countries. (Technological and prospective sector analyses, 2016)

  • Performance of Pine in Argentina: 33 m3/Ha
  • Performance of Eucalyptus in Argentina: 43 m3/Ha
  • Performance of Pine in Chile: 20 m3/Ha
  • Performance of Eucalyptus in Chile: 30 m3/Ha
  • Performance of Pine in the US and Nordic countries: below 20 m3/Ha

Additional information

  • The largest forest product companies (with foreign capital) are based in Misiones (Montecarlo, Puerto Piray, Eldorado) and, to a lesser extent, in Corrientes (Virasoro). In addition to these large and medium-sized companies, there is a large hub of small producers (mainly sawmills). However, the production of furniture is not a widespread activity in the region, and it is one of the main challenges looking into the future. (Technological and prospective sector analyses, 2016)
  • By 2020, the planted forest surface in the Province of Misiones will be 1.8 million hectares. (Technological and prospective sector analyses, 2016)
